About us

May Be Fern is a four-piece queer non-male funk rock band based in Denver, Colorado. The band’s style is a passionate and cohesive collaboration of each individual member’s diverse musical background, producing a sound that is greater than the sum of its parts. The foursome became quickly aligned with a shared vision: to create a unique sound that transcends genre and expectation. May Be Fern welcomes you to join us as we share our love with the world!

Meet The Band

Kate Fern

Kate has been recognized as a powerful vocalist since she started her performing career at the age of seven in the Colorado theater community. She picked up bass at the beginning of 2021 and fell in love. By contributing these two contrasting frequencies in tandem, she creates an integral part of May Be Fern’s sound. With a wide range of inspirations including Ann Wilson, Judy Garland, and Annie Lennox, plus numerous dance and public speaking accolades, Kate helps produce a truly unique experience for any audience. Additionally, Kate’s distinctive style, in both fashion and creativity, helped to construct the foundation of the band. Kate loves nothing more than to inspire joy and passion in as many people as possible and feels the best way to do that is with the art and music she creates as a member of May Be Fern.

Hannah May

Multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and nature lover, Hannah plays both keys and sings in May Be Fern. She has been a professional musician since 2016 in local Colorado bands. She has played Red Rocks and many other well known venues big and small. Hannah aspires to bring music every where she goes. She spends her time studying  jazz and is inspired by rock and blues. She has a strong passion for instrument repair and owns her own repair shop. She says that being a performer is the best feeling in the world and can't imagine spending her time any other way.

Madi Spillman

Hailing from a lineage steeped in musicality, Madi brings a dynamic blend of influences to May Be Fern's sound. Inspired by the rhythmic finesse of Nile Rogers, the haunting melodies of The Cure, and the avant-garde spirit of St. Vincent, Madi's guitar work weaves a tapestry of diverse styles and emotional depth. With 14 years dedicated to honing her musicality, Madi's journey began in a family where music was not just a passion but a way of life. Over the past decade, she has refined her skills both on stage and in the studio, bringing a seasoned presence to every performance. Beyond her musical prowess, Madi channels her creativity into visual artistry as a graphic designer, crafting the distinctive visual identity that accompanies May Be Fern's unique sound.

Originally a classical upright bassist, they have an eclectic music style that takes inspiration from orchestral pieces, jazz, musical theater, and indie pop.
